Abstract
This special report highlights how LISC has responded aggressively to the foreclosure crisis, as part of their Building Sustainable Communities strategy to transform and stabilize distressed communities. The foreclosure crisis that has so firmly underscored the country’s recent economic decline isn’t just about devastated families losing their homes. It is also about neighborhoods losing their economic equilibrium and skidding toward blight and crime. The impact is far-reaching. Declining public resources put increased pressure on public schools, many of which are already failing. Shuttered neighborhood businesses exacerbate existing vacant property problems, reducing vibrant commercial corridors to dark havens for gangs and violence. Escalating unemployment and loss of health coverage threaten the financial future of families across the country.
